Uncovering Questionable Motives: Potential Hair Transplant Candidates May Be At a Disadvantage Because of the “Gold Standard”
In the field of hair transplant surgery, the most accepted technique, called the “gold standard,” is transplanting only micrografts and follicular units – or one, two and three hair grafts. Most hair transplant surgeons nationwide frown upon any variance from this method. They proclaim that this technique yields more natural looking results and prevents that dreaded “hair plug or pluggy look.” Is this really true or could there be another motive lining the pockets of hair transplant surgeons?
Contrary to popular opinion, Dr. Brett Bolton, a hair transplant surgeon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida believes that this common technique may actually be cheating hair transplant patients out of attaining the maximum density and volume in just one procedure. Insufficient results mean more dollars spent on additional hair transplant surgeries for the unsuspecting patient. For example, if less hair is transplanted then the patient will have to return more often than needed for better results and more density. Also, the more a graft is dissected, the more potential there is to damage follicles leading to a decreased yield of healthy growing hairs.
If using micrografts and follicular units only is not the answer then what is the alternative?
Hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Bolton says, “It’s just common sense.” He utilizes one-hair grafts in the frontal hairline to establish a soft natural look that is undetectable. Behind the hairline he places what he calls “multiple follicular unit grafts” which may be as little as one hair, or as many as four to eight hairs. Other doctors will primarily use one and two hair units throughout the entire head, giving a result of sparsity versus density. Simply put, using fewer hairs yields less substantial results. With the patient’s best interest in mind, Dr. Bolton’s emphasis is on naturalness and density while preserving the integrity and health of the delicate hair bundles.
While the potential patient has been taught to think in terms of grafts, how many, and price per graft, the question really to be asked is, how much hair and how much tissue is being harvested for the transplant? To compare, other hair transplant doctors may move thirty-eight hundred hairs in multiple procedures, Dr. Bolton will move as many as up to eight-thousand hairs in one procedure. This is thirty to fifty percent more than other doctors. In addition, price is not determined by graft, but by the unalterable hair count so patients know exactly what they are getting.
This is an example of a bad PLUGGY hair transplant from another clinic corrected by Dr. Bolton. These old style HAIR PLUGS (roll over picture) look totally UN-natural and were easy to repair with modern techniques.
Dr. Bolton 'corrects' bad hair plug transplants performed years ago by other clinics. A hair plug is an antiquated technique where a circular graft of donor tissue was harvested with a punch biopsy instrument. These hair plugs contained as many as 25 hairs and the results looked extremely unnatural. Multiple follicular unit grafts are not plugs at all. they are slit grafts harvested by the same method as follicular units and look completely natural. See our video testimonials for living examples of great natural looking hair transplants that are virtually undetectable.
Hair transplant doctors are charging between twenty to thirty thousand dollars for multiple hair transplant procedures, emphasizing that more will ultimately produce better. The patient is at a complete disadvantage.
Dr. Bolton and his team perform one hair transplant procedure a day. This allows the patient to be the focal point while enjoying the full attention of both the hair transplant doctor and the staff. It is the remarkable skill of a specialist teamed with an unparalleled group of hair transplant technicians, who have a combined experience of over fifty years, to complete the entire transplant procedure in four or five hours. The investment of a hair transplant and half a day will pay-off in six months to a year’s time giving an appearance of health and vitality that can erase as many as twenty years off your appearance.
This is a highly competitive billion dollar industry and hair transplants are now the number one cosmetic surgery for men in the U.S.A. For a hair transplant procedure, Dr. Bolton charges between five thousand and ten thousand dollars depending on the condition of the hair loss.
