Some things get better with time and a hair restoration has not only gotten better, but has exceeded all expectation of what a hair transplant could be. Medical specialties never stop evolving (thankfully) and every year they get just a little bit better and a lot more precise.
Over the past 20-27 years, hair restorations have come a long way. Do you remember when you saw your
first 1980s hair restoration? Nicely ordered hair plugs resembling a doll's head or perhaps, a
cornfield. Were you embarrassed for the recipient, who seemed to be the only one not to acknowledge the
obviousness of the procedure? At the time many considered it the only alternative to being bald.
Jump forward 10 years and new techniques in the hair restoration specialty along with new medical
technology, such as microsurgical techniques, instrumentation and increased magnification all allowed
for more natural and realistic outcomes.
According to the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA), "It wasn't until the mid 1990's that surgical hair restoration came out of the dark ages to produce natural looking results. The advent of follicular unit micro-grafting or follicular unit transplantation and follicular unit extraction has made hair transplantation a virtually undetectable, viable option for many hair loss sufferers."
Older procedures such as 'punch grafts' were cumbersome and unnatural-looking. Each graft contained approximately 8 - 20 hairs and when placed tightly together, could fail due to insufficient blood supply. Spaced further apart, they gave the appearance of the "doll plugs," especially in the frontal hairline. These plugs were not only noticeable, but also unsightly.
A decade ago, the perfect storm of technology, artistry and innovation combined to create virtually undetectable results. Driving the specialty today are the issues of density, naturalness and minimizing visible surgery scars. The goal is for people not to know a patient has had a transplant.
Follicular unit transplantation or FUT (groups of mostly one, two or three follicles) has become the modern gold standard for hair transplantation and hair restoration. This procedure allows hair transplant surgeons to harvest and isolate small, naturally occurring groups of donor hairs, e.g., micrografts (1 hair grafts) and follicular unit grafts (1-4 hair grafts).
These grafts are obtained from a single donor strip of tissue taken from the 'safe zone,' or donor area, in the back of the head and separated under magnification.
The small number of hairs in each slit graft ensures naturalness. During one office procedure, your surgeon may transplant thousands of these groupings of follicular units. A talented physician will use his artistry to achieve that 'natural look,' recreate the client's original hairline and augment the temporal area, front region, mid-scalp and crown.
Not only aesthetically superior to the older plugs, FUT more closely mimic a natural hair growth pattern, allows for a faster rate of recovery, leaves minimal scarring and skin damage and enables the surgeon to fashion different levels of natural-looking density.
Combining these state-of-the art surgical procedures, along with non-surgical therapies, a consultation with an accredited hair transplant surgeon and realistic expectations for your outcome, can lead to results that truly defy detection.
A hair restoration procedure today not only gives you back your hair, but it also gives you an undetectable hair transplant and the confidence to know if anyone is looking at your hair, it is because it looks so great!
